In the Freguesia of Coimbrão traditional houses have some particular features that can be divided in two separate groups: the houses of Coimbrão and Ervedeira and the houses of Praia do Pedrógão.
In Ervedeira and Coimbrão most of the houses were built with adobe (made with a mixture of lime and clay), stone or even with clay brick. The size of the houses was very different of what we can find nowadays. The rooms were very small and 3 or 4 people could be sleeping in the same bedroom. One other feature of the traditional houses of Coimbrão and Ervedeira is the porch (commonly known as alpendurada) which was supported by columns. This porch used to be the space where family and friends met to chatter, host the guests or where young couples met to date.
Both in Coimbrão and Ervedeira and other neighbouring places we can find houses built in the 19th century
In Praia do Pedrógão the houses were quite different because they were totally built in wood, interior and exterior walls. Even today, some of the first masonry houses built in Praia do Pedrógão still resist the passage of time.
Another feature of the traditional houses in Freguesia of Coimbrão is the division of rooms which are composed of: outside kitchen (with a fireplace where food was prepared) and inside kitchen (where the family got together to have their meals), the house of despejo (where the household stuff was kept) and the bedrooms.
